TP Mazembe of the DR Congo are the 2009 African Champions League winners after a 1-0 win over Heartland from Nigeria gave them victory on away goals.

After going into the game 2-1 down from the first leg in Owerri last Sunday, Mazembe levelled the tie on aggregate thanks to a Heartland own goal from Victor Ezuruike on 73 minutes, and took the crown by virtue of the goal they scored in the first leg.

Heartland had Emeka Nwanna sent off late in the game to end with 10-men. It is a first continental crown for Mazembe since their back-to-back triumphs in 1968 and 1969.

Mazembe claim the first prize of US$1.5-million, as well as a place at the FIFA Club World Cup that will be played in the UAE in December. Heartland have to be content with the consolation prize of US$1-million.
