Al Ittihad have won 13 domestic titles but have yet to make an impression on the continental stage.

In 2000 the club made it to the semifinals of the Africa Cup Winners’ Cup, beating by Cameroon’s Canon Yaoundé.

The club was founded in 1944 as a merger between two clubs, Al Nahda and Al Shabab. The won their first Libyan title in 1965 and their city rivalry with Al Ahli Tripoli proves the major backdrop to the Libyan champions.

Al Ittihad provided 11 players for their national squad at the MTN Africa Cup of Nations finals in Egypt in 2006 where Libya qualified for the first time since 1982.
