Heartland Miss Out On Top Spot
September 20, 2009
Nigerian side Heartland missed out on the chance of finishing top of Group B in the African Champions League when they were beaten 2-1 by Zimbabwe side Monomotapa on Sunday.
Heartland will now meet fellow Nigerian side Kano Pillars in the semifinals, while DR Congo club TP Mazembe face off against Sudanese outfit Al Hilal.
Monoz were in chaos before the fixture having suspended coach Rodwell Dhlakama and team manager Clayton Munemo. Assistant coach Taurai Mangwiro took charge for their final game in the pool.
The home side took the lead midway through the first half, before they were penned back to 1-1 10 minutes into the second period.
However, a goal 16 minutes from time was enough to secure a morale-boosting three points for Monomotapa, who still finish as wooden spoonists in the group.
